Location

Gilar Farm is an outstandingly beautiful and unique Grade II* Listed farmhouse set in 500 acres of farmland with its own mountain, ancient woodlands and ponds to be explored during your stay. Built around 1600AD as the seat of the High Sheriff of Denbighshire, original features such as beams, large fireplaces and oak panelling give this period house great charm and character. In 1623 a beautiful gatehouse was added, which, whilst not in active use as an entrance, retains the original gate and leads through a walled garden to the huge studded door on the main house.Through all four seasons visitors to Gilar can observe the workings of the farm, walk or cycle on the many local paths and tracks, take picnics to the ponds (enjoy a dip if warm enough!) or simply relax in front of a roaring log fire. Gilar is located almost exactly in the centre of North Wales, just 2 miles from Pentrefoelas and the Snowdonia National Park, with splendid views of Tryfan and the Snowdonia massif from the approach road and the higher areas of land around the house.

Gilar is a wonderful farmhouse set in a beautiful area for walking and as a base for many attractions. As it is very old the property has many interesting features such as a walk in fireplace! The gatehouse was built in 1623! Parents with young children should not consider putting them in the twin attic room as the stairs down are very steep. The garden is plain but enclosed and was excellent fir children plus one dog.

A very characterful house, lots of wood panelling, plasterwork, enormous fireplace in the sitting room for open fires, rooms at different levels, yet fully up-to-date plumbing and the kitchen had the best stock of equipment we'd seen. Beds were firm and comfortable. Very highly recommended.

Great character property within lovely surroundings. Very peaceful location with nice walks on the doorstep. Good size accommodation which suited our large family. Would certainly return.

Lake Bala Bala

The picturesque market town of Bala is situated on the banks of the tranquil Bala Lake. It’s always popular with visitors and definitely worth visiting. “Bala” is a Welsh word that refers a route between 2 areas of wet ground, in this case the river Dee from Llyn Tegid and the Afon (river)Tryweryn. The town is very traditional, and ranks 11th in terms of the highest percentage of Welsh speakers; almost 80% of the community speak the Brittonic language fluently.

Swallow Falls in the Conwy Valley Betws-y-Coed

The most popular inland resort in North Wales, partly due to its convenience as a location but mostly thanks to its beauty and splendour. A lot of the village dates back to the Victorians, and their influence still abounds in the buildings. Surrounded by the dense forestry and imposing mountains of the region, Betws-y-Coed feels pleasantly out of the way.

Conwy Valley Railway Museum 2 Conwy Valley Railway Museum

A must for all train enthusiasts, Conwy Valley Railway station is located in the pretty village of Betws-y-Coed and features a museum, miniature railway and landscaped grounds. During the high season and at weekends there will be a steam engine pulling the car, whilst at other times a diesel engine will be in service. For an alternative view you can also ride in the fifteen inch gauge electric tramcar – it’s the only one of its kind in Wales!
