Located in the historic market town of Ruthin, the Ruthin Craft Centre (or ‘Canolfan Grefft Rhuthun’ as it’s known in Welsh) is funded by the Arts Council of Wales as part of the Denbighshire County Council.
The centre features six studios, each occupied by crafters who specialise in a range of arts including ceramics, glass blowing, furniture restoration, painting and more. A lot of the time it’s possible to watch the craftsmen at work. In 2007 the original Craft Centre was demolished to make way for a brand new centre. £4.3 million was invested to create the new workshop studios as well as larger galleries, an expanded craft retail gallery, an educational space, two residency studios, a tourist information centre and an on-site restaurant.
The new building was designed by architectural firm Sergison Bates and has been widely commended. In 2009 the Craft Centre won the Dewi-Prys Thomas Prize and was also shortlisted for the 2009 Art Fund Prize. The Design Commission for Wales also named the building as a ‘Design Delight’; well worth a visit for architecture fans.
The gallery also features installations and talks from local artists. Most recently to feature was the work of David Jones.
