Among many family Christmas traditions, the ones that happen on the run up to the Big Day can be extra special: there's something thrilling about the trip to pick out the Christmas tree; it's exciting to purchase those new glitzy baubles; and a trip to meet Santa in his grotto will always be magical (however old you get).
There are some fantastic Christmas shops in North Wales. Many are located in garden centres complete with gift shops and cafes - a one-stop festive day out. All have completely embraced the season, creating dazzling winter wonderlands that make them a must-see destination in their own right.
We love a bit of Christmas (decorations) shopping, not to mention a day out browsing gifts and marvelling at beautifully decorated trees. We're quite partial to a coffee and mince pie afterwards too!
This week, we’ve selected four unmissable Christmas shops: browse, buy, soak up the atmosphere... most of all, be merry!
1. Snowdonia Nurseries & Garden Centre, Glan Conwy
With sweeping views of the Conwy Valley, Snowdonia Nurseries is a family-owned business, situated on the banks of the River Conwy. For more than twenty years, the Evans family have been weaving their magic and transforming the centre into a sparkling winter wonderland every Christmas.
'Ooh' and 'aah' at the festive dioramas - created to give you inspiration; view the massive range of artificial trees in their very own forest; pick out the perfect real tree with the help of expert staff; purchase the latest Christmas decoration trends from the bountiful Christmas department.
Santa regularly visits Snowdonia too! Check out the Facebook page for dates and times. Entry is free, although donations to Ty Gobaith childrens' hospice are warmly welcomed.
Round off your day with a visit to the newly refurbished Olive Tree coffee shop. There’s a selection of delicious sandwiches, cakes, light bites and breakfasts to choose from, plus a brand-new kids corner and cheery wood burning stove for that oh-so-Xmassy feel.
2. North Wales Garden World, Kinmel Bay
In Kinmel Bay, a few minutes off the A55 near Abergele, North Wales Garden World has just undergone a big refurbishment.
The sprawling Christmas department has everything you need for a festive holiday and lots you don't need (but will want when you see it)! There are great-value scented candles, a selection of real and artificial trees (real trees in stock from early December), fun novelty decorations, and a range of musical ornaments that will leave you feeling very nostalgic.
On weekends from the end of November visit Santa’s Winter Village, with activities aplenty for kids to join in: sing-a-longs, decorating gingerbread and writing letters to Santa among others. Pre-booking is advised - check the website or the Facebook page for more information.
Once you’re all shopped out, treat yourself at the Ice Cream Parlour where you will find North Wales’ biggest selection of ice cream - 48 flavours to choose from, including some festive specials! If you need warming up, Butterfly’s Tea Room is adjacent to the garden centre and is a cosy place for a hot chocolate and slice of cake.
3. Jackson’s Boutique Garden Centre, Trelawnyd
This hidden gem is also about ten minutes off the A55, near Prestatyn. Jackson's award-winning Christmas shop is a dazzling cornucopia of festive knick-knacks and it's easy to lose yourself browsing the various displays (word of advice: if you like browsing in peace, it gets very busy at weekends).
The garden centre hosts a packed schedule of Christmas events including Late Night Shopping, Tea with Santa and the very popular Christmas Open Day with food tasting, a raffle and mulled wine. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for up-to-date information about Christmas events.
The Potting Shed Cafe onsite is the perfect place for a panad (cup of tea) and a cake, or a light lunch after picking up the tree or those special baubles.
4. The Tweedmill, St Asaph
This huge shopping outlet in St Asaph is a one-stop shop for Christmas. You can choose from a good selection of artificial and pre-lit trees, traditional wreaths and garlands, baubles, decorations and lights, and afterwards browse homewares, fashion, gift and pet departments. You can even pre-order your turkey and meats and other festive foods from the Farm Shop!
Tweedmill has a choice of two dining areas. Blas Clwyd has lovely views of the Clwydian countryside - book a luxury Christmas Afternoon Tea for a proper 'grown-up' festive experience. For something a bit more low key, unwind with coffee and cake at the Tower Coffee Shop.
