From this Sunday, the 17th September 2023 vehicles like cars, buses and lorries in Wales must go slower on some roads, as where the speed limit is currently 30mph, this will change to be 20 miles per hour on most roads. The idea is being implemented by the Welsh Government who say the move will make it safer for everyone who lives, works, and plays in these areas.

In a first move of it's kind in the UK, the Welsh Government says it has taken a significant step towards creating safer roads and communities by introducing default 20mph speed limits on restricted roads across Wales. With a focus on reducing accidents, promoting active transportation, improving public health, and safeguarding the environment, this initiative marks Wales as a pioneering nation in road safety.

Understanding the 20mph Speed Limits

Restricted roads, typically found in residential and built-up areas with frequent pedestrian and cyclist activity, are now subject to a default 20mph speed limit in Wales. These roads are easily identifiable by the presence of street lights, spaced no more than 200 yards apart. The decision to implement this change stems from a desire to minimize the number of accidents and severe injuries, consequently reducing the burden on healthcare services. Furthermore, encouraging more people to walk and cycle within communities contributes to improved physical and mental well-being while ensuring a safer and cleaner environment for future generations.

Will this initiative affect North Wales as well?

Absolutely, yes. While the initial implementation was focused on specific communities, the default 20mph speed limits will be adopted as a blanket nation-wide measure across all of Wales, including North Wales, this Sunday.

All guests who have bookings and are due to visit after this date, or who are here over the Sunday when the implementation occurs are encouraged to seek additional sources of information from the Welsh government website directly, and ensure you abide by the new laws when visiting any part of Wales, including North Wales.
