For a medium length walk through the lush green valleys of Snowdonia, you can’t get much better than this one around Dolwyddelan. Lasting around four miles, the walk is a lovely way to spend your day, and you can even have a bite to eat at the café.
Start off at the station and follow the road to the Cwm Penamnen valley. Reaching the far end, you will see the mound – this is where a castle once stood. Go back to around the halfway point; here you can trek up a fairly steep wooded path. On top of the ridge you’ll be able to enjoy a seriously spectacular view.
After taking some time to enjoy the vista, walk down towards the river and follow the path through the woods at a leisurely pace; this will take you back to the village. As you make your way through the woods, keep your ears open: you should be able to hear the sad song of the willow warblers that live here.
While in Dolwyddelan, it would be a pity not to pay a visit to the dramatic castle. Although in ruins, they are surprisingly intact, allowing you to fill in the blanks to imagine what an imposing presence it must have once held.
